*Successful Excision of a Rare Cervical Rib at Jubilee Memorial Hospital*
Jubilee Memorial Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, has successfully performed the excision of a cervical rib, marking another important milestone in its commitment to advanced and compassionate healthcare.
A 16-year-old male patient presented to our hospital with complaints of a swelling over the left side of the lower neck. On detailed evaluation, he was diagnosed with a cervical rib—an extra rib arising from the lower cervical vertebra (C7). Cervical ribs are a rare congenital anomaly and are usually managed only at tertiary care centres due to their complexity and potential complications.
The patient hailed from a very poor family background and approached Jubilee Memorial Hospital seeking medical help. Understanding the medical challenge and the patient’s circumstances, our hospital accepted the case and proceeded with treatment.
The surgical excision of the cervical rib was successfully performed by our renowned Plastic Surgery team led by Dr. M. M. Jacob, along with his dedicated team. The surgery was completed without complications and was offered at an affordable cost, ensuring accessible care for the patient and his family.
If left untreated, a cervical rib can lead to multiple complications, including pain, neurovascular compression, and functional impairment. Timely surgical intervention helped prevent such outcomes in this case.
Jubilee Memorial Hospital is indeed proud to have accomplished this rare and challenging procedure, reinforcing its role as a centre capable of managing complex cases with expertise, compassion, and social responsibility.
